Happy Chicken Day

2/19/2020

Students, faculty and honored guests joined the festivities as we celebrated the newly donated fence at W.G. Pearson Elementary. The Garden and Engineering (G&E) Club students were excited to be outside on a lovely day. They were busy tilling, planting, feeding chickens and learning. We were all happy to take a break to celebrate Happy Chicken Day! We were especially honored to be joined by Wendy Jacobs, Durham County Commissioner, Ms. Tracy Lockhart, Assistant Principal, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Crain of Allied Fence,  Mr. Alan Slavin, Science Coach, Mr. Delbert Jarmon, Community Outreach Coordinator and our Creekside Cares volunteers.

The G&E Club is lead by two fifth grade teachers, Ms. Erika Luke and Mr. Mitchell Wilson. The club meets each Tuesday afternoon and introduces students to the wonder of the world around them.

Creekside Cares volunteers work with students each week as well. Ms. Luke and Mr. Wilson created the vision and the master plan for this wonderful learning space. Each year the project has continued to grow and improve. Usually each year, volunteers from Fidelity arrive in the early fall and provide hundreds of volunteer hours to work with the educators on improvements. This year it became evident that the enclosure around the chicken coop was too small. W.G. Pearson asked Creekside Cares if we could perhaps assist them.

Then the magic happened! Our volunteers got together and brainstormed on possibilities. We even briefly thought about installing a fence ourselves. Thankfully, we reached out to local professional vendor, Allied Fence Company of Raleigh. Owners Tony and Kelly Crain were very quick to jump on board and graciously worked with us even after we asked for a larger enclosure. Allied worked with school officials to obtain permits, district approvals and created a beautiful plan that would serve the students for a very, very long time.

Allied's staff were professional, efficient and so friendly. Now the dream is a reality. Thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly to provide a wonderful environment for learning! We love serving our community with heart.

Creekside Cares Talent Portfolio needs you!

2/4/2020

Many of you have fascinating stories – and our stories might just be a real blessing to the students and teachers at W.G. Pearson Elementary School. As you may know, W.G. Pearson is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) magnet school, and they love to have outside speakers come in to talk to the students about topics that relate to their lessons.  Creekside Cares has set up a way to let the teachers at Pearson know about all the talent and experience here at Creekside. We need your help to create a list of topics, based on our experiences, on which we might talk or give a demonstration at the school. It might be related to our careers or travels or even a hobby.

The Creekside Portfolio will be a “library” of topics and speakers which the teachers can browse. The teachers can then contact the speaker directly to discuss possible topics and dates. Being listed does not obligate you to speak, it merely creates the opportunity. Many of you have wonderful stories worth sharing. Maybe it is a career in a technical field, such as nursing or engineering. It might be your travels overseas or in different parts of the US. How many of us have lived in different countries or interesting regions of the United States?  Even your hobbies and interests, such as photography, fine arts, or music might be a good topic for a talk or demonstration. Outside speakers can spark the interest of students and open their eyes to a bigger world. And the teachers greatly appreciate the show of outside support for students.

Don’t worry about “speaking in public!” Many of volunteers report their experiences are warm and welcoming. Residents have given talks on various subjects including meteorology, fluid dynamics, aviation, and careers. The teachers and faculty coaches are happy to work with you on ideas regarding your time in the classroom. It isn't hard to find ways that are fun for both you and the students. You might show pictures, or bring objects, or decide upon a group activity – but it will be up to you to decide what to do, how much time you need and how to interact with the class. In the end,  you decide what will be comfortable and fun for you – which will always be beneficial for the students.

STEAM Week is coming in May!

During the week of May 4-8, W.G. Pearson will be having a “STEAM showcase,” with special activities for the students. They are thinking of having an  “International Adventure Day” on May 5 and would love to have Creekside residents come and share some of their travel experiences with the students.  On May 6, they will probably have a  Career Day, where the students can talk to people about various careers. Your vocation can open up the eyes of the students to opportunities they might not have been exposed to before. Our goal is to have some of our Creekside Cares Portfolio volunteers at STEAM Week on both days. Please consider joining us!

Signing up does not commit you – it merely helps us start exploring possibilities. The plans for this program have been in the works for almost a year now. We are super excited to see our dreams realized.

We hope you will pass the word!

The Creekside Portfolio isn't restricted to just members of Creekside Cares. Please feel free to share this email with any neighbors who live here in Creekside and might have an interesting story to tell. The more speakers we have, the more students we can help!
