We want to make a difference in our local community. We have adopted WG Pearson Elementary School. This school is a Title I school and 100% of the student body qualifies for FREE breakfast and lunch. These students have been working hard with our community to improve their test scores and reduce their rates of grade retention. With just a little help and interest from our community, we believe we can make a huge difference to these kids. Let's help them and help our community. We will be collecting these supplies at the Creekside Pokeno Night August 21, 2018 at Hemingway Hall. Click the arrow below to watch our video. Click the School Supply List Button below to see the list of needed supplies. Thanks! Click the arrow to watch our video. Thanks! We are proud to participate in the Backpack Buddies Program at WG Pearson Elementary School. We will be donating Backpacks to the food pantry to use in distributing food each Friday to at-risk children. Many of our members have already been visiting local Wallgreen's to purchase the backpacks. As of today, we have collected over 50 backpacks. We can't wait to share the news with the school!
We had a wonderful visit today from Mr. Delbert Jarmon, Family and Community Director from WG Pearson Elementary School. Lori College and Rhonda Van Voorhies invited him to visit after learning about the program from our member, Pirkko Urli.
He shared the story of the school with us. WG Pearson Elementary School is a STEAM Magnet School serving grades K-5. It is a Title I School with 100% of the students qualifying for free breakfast and lunch. This community school needs our help and we have decided to adopt the school. The school has a Backpack Buddies Program to send food home each weekend to students who have been identified as at-risk for going hungry. Our first service project to help the school will be to provide at least 60 backpacks to the students K-5. These backpacks are filled each week with non-perishable items from the school's on-site food pantry. On Fridays, the backpacks are sent home to provide food over the weekend to these at-risk students. Each Monday, the students return the backpacks to be filled again the following week. We hope you will join us in collecting backpacks for this very worthy cause in our community. It is easy to understand that hungry students don't perform well in school. By helping these students who might otherwise go hungry; we can help them learn, grow and thrive! We will also be collecting school supplies for the students and classrooms. Mr. Jarman will be providing us with a list of needed supplies soon. Please stay tuned. If you are interested in participating in the backpack drive, please contact: Lori College or Rhonda Van Voorhies. |
